Measure rectangular room walls and optional ceiling, subtract openings, add waste allowance, divide by sheet area, round up to full sheets, and review purchased area and optional material cost for a planning purchase quantity.

Wall area equals 2 × (room length + room width) × wall height—the floor perimeter multiplied by wall height for all four walls.
When Include ceiling is checked, ceiling area is room length × room width. Uncheck it when only walls will be drywalled.
Enter the combined openings area for one room. This is the total area of doors, windows, and other surfaces that will not receive drywall.
When several rooms share the same dimensions, ceiling setting, and openings area, enter the count once. Net area per room is multiplied by number of identical rooms.

Exact sheets required is the mathematical count before rounding—not a purchase quantity. It equals required drywall with waste divided by area per sheet.
After waste is applied, the calculator rounds up to the next whole sheet because partial sheets cannot be purchased. If the exact count is already whole, no extra sheet is added.
Extra purchased drywall compares purchased material to your net drywall area. Sheet rounding overage compares purchased material only to required drywall with waste—the portion added solely by sheet rounding.
This calculator divides total area by sheet area. It does not determine seam placement, sheet orientation, or optimal cuts on specific walls and ceilings.
Material cost uses sheets to buy and your optional price per sheet only. Fasteners, compound, tape, framing, delivery, taxes, and labor are not included.

For a rectangular room, wall area equals 2 × (room length + room width) × wall height. That is the perimeter of the floor multiplied by wall height for all four walls. Enter room length, width, and wall height in Room dimensions mode and the calculator applies this formula after converting your units to feet.
Include the ceiling only when you plan to drywall it. When Include ceiling is checked, the calculator adds room length × room width as flat ceiling area. When unchecked, ceiling area is zero and only walls are counted. The choice is yours based on your project.
Enter the combined openings area for one room if you want to exclude doors, windows, and other surfaces without drywall. Subtracting small openings is not always necessary for a rough estimate because waste and cutoffs may offset part of that area, but this calculator uses the value you enter—it does not decide for you.
Waste depends on room geometry, number of corners and openings, sheet size, seam layout, installer skill, and ability to reuse cutoffs. A 10% allowance is a common planning starting point, but complex rooms often need more. Enter the percentage that fits your project; the calculator does not prescribe one universal value.
Sheet area is width × length. A larger sheet covers more area per unit, which can reduce the sheet count, but layout and cuts still matter. Enter the actual dimensions of the sheets you plan to buy—the default 4 ft × 8 ft is only a planning example. Confirm sizes with your supplier or manufacturer.
Drywall is sold in whole sheets. After waste is applied to net drywall area, the calculator divides by sheet area and rounds up to the next whole sheet. If the exact sheet count is already a whole number, no extra sheet is added. This is an area-based estimate, not an optimized wall-by-wall layout.
Extra purchased drywall is all material in purchased sheets minus your net drywall area—it includes both your waste allowance and any extra from rounding up to full sheets. Sheet rounding overage is only the additional area beyond required drywall with waste, caused solely by buying whole sheets.
