How to Calculate Gravel for a Driveway or Base
Calculate gravel volume from compacted area and depth, then use the actual supplier density to estimate weight.
Introduction
Gravel is estimated first by volume: plan area × finished compacted depth. Weight is a second conversion that depends on the actual aggregate, gradation, moisture, and supplier data. Keeping those two stages separate prevents a convenient tons-per-yard assumption from looking universal.
Driveways and bases may contain more than one material layer. Calculate each layer independently because its area, compacted thickness, and density can differ. The estimate is a purchasing aid; pavement structure, drainage, and compaction requirements remain design and field decisions.

Measurements you need
Record dimensions on a sketch and label every unit. Separate areas whenever shape, depth, product, or installation condition changes.
Surface length and width
Measure the actual limits of the layer. Split tapers, turnouts, and changing widths into simpler areas.
Compacted depth
Use the finished layer thickness called for by the project—not an assumed loose delivery depth.
Circular diameter
For a circular bed or turnaround, measure through the center and use half that value as the radius.
Supplier density
For a weight estimate, obtain short tons per cubic yard or pounds per cubic foot for the selected material and condition.

- 2,000 pounds = 1 US short ton

For a rectangle, area = length × width. For a circle, area = π × radius². Estimated short tons = cubic yards × supplier density in short tons per cubic yard.

Step-by-step calculation method
Map each layer
Treat subbase, base, and surface aggregate separately. A layer diagram makes accidental double counting easier to catch.
Find the plan area
Multiply length by width for each rectangle, or use π × radius² for a circle. Add the areas only when they share the same depth and material.
Convert compacted depth
Divide inches by 12 so depth is in feet before multiplying by square feet.
Calculate volume
Multiply square feet by depth in feet to get cubic feet, then divide by 27 for cubic yards.
Estimate weight carefully
Apply the selected supplier’s density, then keep any allowance and supplier order rounding visible as separate steps.
Small worked example
Follow the numbers once
A straight driveway base is 50 ft × 12 ft at a compacted depth of 4 in. This volume example does not assume a material density.
- 1.50 × 12 = 600 ft²
- 2.4 ÷ 12 = 0.3333 ft
- 3.600 × 0.3333 = 200 ft³
- 4.200 ÷ 27 = 7.407 yd³
The measured layer is about 7.41 yd³ before any project allowance. Multiply that volume by density only after the quarry or supplier identifies the selected aggregate’s appropriate conversion.

Use judgment openly
Compaction, density, and allowance are different inputs
Compacted depth describes the finished geometry. Density converts that geometry into weight. An allowance addresses limited field or handling uncertainty. Combining them into one unexplained factor makes the estimate hard to audit.
Ask whether quoted material is sold by loose cubic yard or by weight and whether the supplier’s conversion reflects the product being delivered. Measure each distinct lift or aggregate separately.

Common calculation mistakes
Using loose depth as finished depth
Placement and compaction affect delivered quantity; base the geometry on the specified finished layer and coordinate conversion with the supplier.
Applying one density to every gravel
Gradation, source, and moisture can change weight per volume.
Ignoring changing width
Divide irregular runs into measured segments instead of using the maximum width throughout.
Skipping drainage and subgrade review
A correct quantity cannot make an unsuitable section perform.
Before the order
Field check before purchasing
Walk the full limits after grading and compare several widths and depths with the sketch. Identify soft areas, transitions, utility covers, aprons, and tapered edges that require separate geometry. Confirm that the measured depth is the finished compacted layer represented in the estimate.
Send the supplier the material description, calculated cubic yards, and intended use. Ask for the relevant density or sales conversion, delivery unit, truck capacity, and minimum order. Record those answers beside the calculation instead of replacing them with an unlabeled online rule of thumb.
What the number cannot tell you
Practical limits of the result
- The calculation does not design layer thickness, gradation, drainage, geotextile, or compaction effort.
- Truck payloads, minimum loads, moisture, and scale weights affect purchasing.
- Confirm material specification and site preparation with project documents, supplier, and local requirements.
