How to Calculate Asphalt Tonnage
Calculate compacted asphalt volume and convert it to short tons using a project-appropriate mix density.
Introduction
Asphalt tonnage is not found from area alone. First calculate compacted volume from area × compacted thickness; then multiply volume by an appropriate density for the selected mix. Because density and placement conditions vary, a transparent estimate shows the geometry and density input separately.
Use the finished compacted thickness from project information, not an improvised loose-lift assumption. The paving contractor or supplier should confirm mix, density basis, lift plan, minimum load, and truck logistics. This guide covers quantity arithmetic, not pavement design.

Start on site
Measurements you need
Record dimensions on a sketch and label every unit. Separate areas whenever shape, depth, product, or installation condition changes.
Paving length and width
Measure the actual paved limits. Divide flares and variable-width areas into smaller shapes.
Compacted thickness
Use the required finished thickness for the specific lift. Do not substitute loose screed depth without project guidance.
Quantity of identical areas
Multiply only genuinely identical patches or pads; otherwise calculate each separately.
Mix density
Use the density basis provided for the selected asphalt mixture and ensure units match the volume calculation.

- 27 cubic feet = 1 cubic yard
- 2,000 pounds = 1 US short ton

The formula
When area is in ft², depth in ft, and density in lb/ft³, the intermediate weight is pounds. Divide by 2,000 for US short tons.

Short tons = area × compacted depth × density ÷ 2,000

Step-by-step calculation method
Separate shapes and lifts
Map each area and each compacted thickness. Surface and base courses may require different calculations or mixes.
Calculate plan area
Use length × width for rectangles or π × radius² for circles, then sum compatible areas.
Convert thickness to feet
Divide compacted inches by 12 before multiplying by square feet.
Calculate compacted volume
Area × compacted depth gives cubic feet. Keep this value visible before applying density.
Apply density and purchasing rules
Multiply by the verified density, divide pounds by 2,000, add an explicit allowance if justified, and confirm ordering increments with the plant.
Small worked example
Follow the numbers once
A 50 ft × 12 ft paving area has a planned compacted thickness of 3 in. The example stops at volume so no universal asphalt density is implied.
- 1.50 × 12 = 600 ft²
- 2.3 ÷ 12 = 0.25 ft
- 3.600 × 0.25 = 150 ft³
- 4.150 ÷ 27 = 5.556 yd³
The compacted volume is 150 ft³, or about 5.56 yd³. Multiply 150 ft³ by the project mix density in lb/ft³, then divide by 2,000 to estimate short tons.

Use judgment openly
Density and rolldown need project input
The Asphalt Paving Handbook distinguishes loose placement from compacted lift thickness. Quantity planning should therefore start with the specified compacted geometry and coordinate production or placement factors with the paving team.
Do not present one density as correct for every mix. State the density used, its source, and whether it represents the condition needed by the calculation.

Using area as tonnage
Area needs both thickness and density before it becomes weight.
Confusing compacted and loose thickness
They represent different states of the material.
Mixing metric tonnes and short tons
A US short ton is 2,000 lb; a metric tonne is 1,000 kg.
Rounding every intermediate
Keep precision until the final purchasing step.
Before the order
Field check before purchasing
Compare the area sketch with the actual paving limits after base preparation. Check flare widths, curved returns, patches, drainage structures, and each location where compacted thickness changes. Confirm that multiple lifts have not been combined into one ambiguous depth.
Ask the paving team to confirm mix designation, density basis, compacted lift plan, allowance, plant minimum, and how scale tickets will be reconciled with the estimate. Preserve the volume calculation even when purchasing is by weight; it is the clearest way to audit area and thickness.
What the number cannot tell you
Practical limits of the result
- This method does not design pavement structure, drainage, subgrade, mix, compaction, or lift sequence.
- Plant density, minimum loads, trucking, temperature, and site access can affect the actual order.
- Use project specifications and qualified paving guidance for thickness and material selection.
