How to Calculate Fence Panels and Posts
Measure a net fence run, calculate full panels or pickets, and derive post and rail counts from the chosen layout.
Introduction
A fence takeoff begins with the net length of each straight run after gates and openings are handled. For prefabricated panels, divide run length by actual panel width and round up for layout. A straight run with panels between posts generally needs one more post than installed panel sections.
Individual-picket layouts use a different calculation: post sections are based on a selected maximum spacing, while pickets are based on picket width plus gap. Corners, gates, end conditions, slopes, changes in direction, and structural requirements must be laid out explicitly rather than buried in a percentage.

Measurements you need
Record dimensions on a sketch and label every unit. Separate areas whenever shape, depth, product, or installation condition changes.
Fence run length
Measure along the proposed fence line between defined end, corner, or gate posts. Verify property information before treating the line as buildable.
Gate and opening widths
Remove openings from infill length but retain the posts and hardware required by the chosen gate system.
Panel or picket dimensions
Use actual panel width, or actual picket width plus intended gap.
Post spacing and rails
Use a project-appropriate maximum section length and the selected number of rails per section.
Units used in this method
- 12 inches = 1 foot
- Panel sections = run length ÷ actual panel width, rounded up
- Straight-run posts = installed sections + 1

Break the layout into runs
Create a separate line item between every corner, gate, and change in direction or grade.
Find net infill length
Subtract gates and other true openings from the relevant run while preserving their special posts.
Choose panel or picket mode
Panels are counted by actual panel width. Pickets are counted by repeated width-plus-gap pitch.
Calculate sections and posts
Round sections up so spacing does not exceed the chosen maximum. For a simple independent straight run, posts are sections + 1.
Add rails and purchasing allowance
Rails equal sections × rails per section in the simple model. Add a separate, justified allowance to primary infill material and round whole pieces.
Small worked example
Follow the numbers once
A single straight 80 ft run has no gate and uses 8 ft actual-width prefabricated panels. No panel waste is added.
- 1.80 ÷ 8 = 10 exact panel sections
- 2.Panels required for layout = 10
- 3.Posts = 10 + 1 = 11
- 4.Installed panel capacity = 10 × 8 = 80 ft
The simple run uses 10 panels and 11 posts. A gate, corner, shared terminal, slope, shortened panel, or manufacturer-specific post system changes that layout and should be drawn rather than assumed.

Use judgment openly
Treat gates, corners, and slopes as layout events
A percentage cannot add the correct hinge post, latch post, corner post, brace, connector, or shortened infill. Mark these elements on a plan and count them directly.

Before the order
Field check before purchasing
Walk every proposed run and mark endpoints, corners, gates, grade changes, and obstacles on the sketch. Compare the line with authoritative boundary and easement information and arrange required utility locating before excavation. Measure gates separately rather than treating them as ordinary panel openings.
Lay out actual post centers for each run and reconcile shortened panels, shared corner posts, terminal posts, and gate systems. Confirm product dimensions, connectors, hardware, material compatibility, and local requirements. A count that cannot be placed on a dimensioned plan is not ready for purchase.
