Introduction

A fence plan is a sequence of runs, not one perimeter number. Start and end each run at a corner, direction change, gate opening, or other layout control point. Record the net straight length that the calculator will model, and show which posts may be shared between adjacent runs.

The calculator supports one straight run at a time in individual-picket or prefabricated-panel mode. It has no gate input and does not resolve corner sharing automatically. Model the straight net runs, keep gate materials separate, and reconcile end, corner, gate, and shared posts on the site sketch before ordering.

  • A universal post spacing, panel width, rail count, picket gap, or waste allowance.

Establish the proposed fence alignment from authoritative project information before measuring; the calculator cannot locate a property boundary.

Define each straight run

Break at corners, direction changes, gates, ends, or material changes. Give every run an arrow and ID.

Choose material mode

Use panel mode for actual prefabricated panel width or picket mode for post spacing, rails, picket width, and gap.

Plan gates outside the calculator

Subtract confirmed gate openings from affected straight runs only as the layout requires, then schedule gate leaves, hardware, and special posts separately.

On-site sequence

Step-by-step site-measurement workflow

  1. Establish control points

    Mark F-A, F-B, and so on at ends, corners, gates, and direction changes. Do not begin with one summed perimeter.

  2. Measure each run

    Measure the straight distance between control points along the intended alignment. Record slope/grade notes separately because the calculator uses linear run length.

  3. Resolve gate openings

    Place gate width and posts on the sketch. The calculator has no gate field, so define which net straight run is being entered and keep gate materials outside its result.

  4. Choose product inputs

    Copy actual panel width or establish project spacing/rail/picket/gap inputs from the selected system and responsible project party.

  5. Calculate run by run

    Save sections, panels or pickets, posts, rails where applicable, whole-unit rounding, and optional cost for each straight run.

  6. Reconcile the site layout

    Overlay results on the sketch and remove only verified duplicate shared posts. Add gate, corner, brace, and special components from the approved system takeoff.

From estimate to order

Calculated quantity versus purchase quantity

Sections and panels round up so one straight run is covered; posts are tied to the section layout, but the page plan may share a corner post between two runs or add special gate/end posts. Reconcile physically, not by blind addition.

Preserve run-level results, then create a site total with a separate adjustment log for shared posts, gates, corners, ends, and special hardware. Do not alter run length just to force a preferred unit count.
