How to Calculate Paint for Walls and Ceilings

Find net paintable area, account for coats and product coverage, and round to the containers actually sold.

Introduction

Paint quantity begins with net paintable area, not floor area. For a rectangular room, wall area is the perimeter × wall height; ceiling area is length × width. Subtract doors and windows only when they will not be painted, then multiply by the number of coats.

Coverage is a product input. Surface texture, porosity, color change, application method, and the exact coating can change how far a gallon goes. Use the manufacturer’s label or technical data, calculate exact gallons, and finally round up to containers available for purchase.

Measurements you need

Record dimensions on a sketch and label every unit. Separate areas whenever shape, depth, product, or installation condition changes.

Room length and width

These dimensions establish the perimeter and, when included, ceiling area.

Wall height

Measure from the paintable base to the paintable top, treating unusually shaped walls separately.

Openings

Measure width × height for doors and windows that will not receive the coating.

Coats and coverage

Record the planned number of coats and the coverage stated for the exact product and surface conditions.

Core arithmetic

The formula

Net wall area = 2 × (room length + room width) × wall height − unpainted openings. Add ceiling area separately when it will be painted.

Base formula

Gallons = net area × coats × (1 + allowance) ÷ coverage

1.Wall area = perimeter × height
2.Coverage demand = net area × coats × allowance factor
3.Containers = exact gallons ÷ container gallons, rounded up

Repeatable workflow

Step-by-step calculation method

  1. Find gross wall area

    Add length and width, multiply by two for room perimeter, then multiply by wall height.

  2. Add painted ceilings

    Multiply room length by width for each ceiling included. Keep trim, cabinets, and special surfaces separate when they use another product.

  3. Subtract unpainted openings

    Calculate each opening’s width × height and subtract the total only when those surfaces are excluded.

  4. Apply coats and allowance

    Multiply net paintable area by coat count. Add any stated allowance to this coverage demand rather than silently changing room dimensions.

  5. Divide by product coverage

    Use the product’s ft²/gal value, then round the exact gallons up to the combination of container sizes you can buy.

Small worked example

Follow the numbers once

A 12 ft × 10 ft room has 8 ft walls, one 3 ft × 7 ft door, two 3 ft × 4 ft windows, no ceiling, and two coats. The selected coating is labeled at 350 ft²/gal for the planned use.

  1. 1.2 × (12 + 10) × 8 = 352 ft² gross walls
  2. 2.21 + 24 = 45 ft² openings
  3. 3.352 − 45 = 307 ft² net walls
  4. 4.307 × 2 ÷ 350 = 1.754 gal

The exact demand is about 1.75 gallons before any separate allowance. Purchase quantity depends on available container sizes. Recheck the exact product data rather than assuming the example coverage.

Use judgment openly

Coverage belongs to the product

Sherwin-Williams notes that coverage varies with application method and surface type or condition. Primer, specialty coatings, textured walls, porous repairs, and large color changes should not inherit a generic wall-paint figure.

If multiple coatings are used, calculate each system separately. A ceiling paint, wall paint, and trim enamel are different purchasing lines even when they share room measurements.

Using floor area for walls

Floor area does not reflect wall perimeter or height.

Forgetting the coat multiplier

Two coats require twice the coverage demand before other adjustments.

Subtracting painted doors

Subtract only surfaces excluded from that coating.

Use the exact label or technical data and account for conditions.

Field check before purchasing

Confirm which walls, ceilings, doors, and trim receive each product and color. Look for textured surfaces, bare repairs, stains, dramatic color changes, or porous materials that may change preparation, primer, coats, or real coverage. Recheck the largest wall and every opening entered.

At purchase, match the coverage input to current product information and record the container sizes available. For older painted surfaces, consider whether preparation could disturb lead-based paint and follow applicable EPA guidance. Quantity arithmetic never replaces label directions or safe work practices.

  • The estimate cannot predict absorption, hiding, transfer loss, or final appearance.
  • Coverage and required coats vary by product, substrate, color, and application method.
  • Confirm surface preparation, ventilation, safety, and application instructions with the manufacturer.
