Introduction

Painting quantities become manageable when the project is a surface schedule rather than a room count. List each wall and ceiling, note which product and color covers it, measure openings that will not receive that coating, and group only surfaces with the same coverage, coat count, container size, and purchasing decision.

Buildarith supports a rectangular-room mode and a known-area mode. The room model assumes one wall height and repeated door/window sizes within that run, so rooms with different heights or nonuniform openings are often clearer as separate calculations or as a reviewed known net area. Coverage and coats must come from the selected product and project decision.

Decisions to make before measuring

Define coating groups

Separate walls, ceilings, trim, and surfaces receiving different products or colors. The calculator should receive one internally consistent paint group at a time.

Choose room or known-area mode

Use room mode for rectangular rooms with one wall height and repeated opening sizes. Use a separately calculated known area for varied walls and openings.

Decide included surfaces

Mark whether the ceiling is included and which doors, windows, built-ins, or panels are not painted.

Confirm product inputs

Record coverage, coat count, container size, and any allowance without converting a label estimate into a guarantee.

Step-by-step site-measurement workflow

  1. Create the surface schedule

    List W1, W2, W3, W4, and C1 for every room. Mark product/color beside each surface before grouping.

  2. Measure room geometry

    Capture room length, width, and actual wall height. If heights differ, measure walls separately instead of forcing one height across the room.

  3. Measure non-painted openings

    Record width and height for doors and windows. When sizes vary, calculate opening area outside the repeated-room model and use a reviewed known area.

  4. Group like coatings

    Combine only surfaces using the same product, coverage, coats, allowance, and container size. A ceiling paint and wall paint need separate runs.

  5. Enter product data

    Copy coverage and unit from the selected label or technical data sheet; select actual container size or enter custom volume.

  6. Reconcile purchase units

    Review paintable area, coat-adjusted demand, exact gallons, and whole containers, then note primer or preparation separately.

Simplify complex geometry

Break the project into simple sections

Divide by coating group, not merely by room. A surface belongs in one group with one product, color, coat count, coverage rate, and package size.

From estimate to order

Calculated quantity versus purchase quantity

The calculation moves from net paintable area to coat-adjusted area, then allowance-adjusted coverage demand, exact liquid volume, and whole containers. Keep these steps visible so openings and coats can be audited.

A whole-container purchase can exceed exact gallons. Record that packaging overage instead of changing coverage or coat count, and keep different colors/products in separate purchase lines.
