Mulch Calculation Example for a 500 sq ft Bed
Turn a 500 sq ft garden bed and an illustrative 3 in depth into cubic feet, cubic yards, and 2 ft³ bag quantities.
Introduction

Use judgment openly
A one-inch depth change is substantial over 500 ft²
The chart holds area at 500 ft² and removes allowance so depth is isolated. Two inches produces less volume than the baseline; four inches produces one-third more than three inches because volume varies directly with depth.
Choose the depth appropriate to the actual project rather than copying the baseline. When existing mulch already occupies part of the desired depth, measure what must be added instead of calculating the full layer again.
