Tile Calculation Example for a Bathroom Floor

Calculate tile and boxes for a 10 × 8 ft bathroom floor using 12 × 24 in tile, a stated waste allowance, and real box rounding.

Introduction

This bathroom example uses a measured 10 × 8 ft net tile surface. No excluded area is subtracted inside the calculator because it has no separate exclusion input; if a permanent uncovered zone exists, determine the net surface before entering dimensions or use known-area mode.

The selected tile is 24 × 12 in, or exactly 2 ft² per tile in the calculator’s area model. With 10% example waste, the arithmetic requires 44 tiles. Because the chosen box contains 8 tiles, the purchase becomes 6 boxes or 48 tiles, covering 96 ft².

Record dimensions on a sketch and label every unit. Separate areas whenever shape, depth, product, or installation condition changes.

Use net tile surface

The example assumes all 10 × 8 ft will receive tile. If part will not be tiled, remove that area first rather than inventing an unsupported excluded-area field.

Twenty-four inches equals 2 ft and twelve inches equals 1 ft, so one tile represents 2 ft² in the calculator’s quantity model.

Waste changes the target continuously; boxes change in steps

The chart keeps the floor, tile size, and eight-tile package fixed. At some waste percentages, the required tile count changes without adding a box; at the next threshold, the full-box count jumps.

Cuts, layout orientation, pattern, obstacles, breakage risk, and the usefulness of offcuts should inform the entered allowance. The chart demonstrates purchase sensitivity, not an installation standard.

Why is there no excluded-area line in the result?

The calculator does not have that input. This example uses an already net 80 ft² surface.

Why buy 48 tiles when 44 are required?

The product is modeled as eight tiles per box, so six full boxes contain 48.

Is 10% waste always enough?

No. It is illustrative; cuts, pattern, geometry, product, and installer planning determine the project input.

Does the calculation include grout or adhesive?
