Introduction

Deck-board estimating begins with a surface plan and a direction arrow. The calculator uses deck length and width, or known area; actual board width and length; gap; board direction in dimension mode; and an entered waste percentage. These values can describe rows and required board lengths, but only for the supported rectangular model.

Picture framing, diagonal patterns, breaker boards, stairs, notches, curved edges, and multiple board lengths need separate layout work. The Deck Calculator does not design joists, beams, posts, footings, railings, connections, or fasteners. Keep surface-material planning distinct from structural design.

Step-by-step site-measurement workflow

  1. Draw the deck perimeter

    Label rectangular zones and mark cutouts, projections, stairs, and areas receiving picture-frame or other special treatment.

  2. Choose direction per zone

    Add arrows. Confirm which plan dimension becomes board run and which becomes cross width.

  3. Measure supported rectangles

    Record length and width for each zone. Use known area only when a reviewed takeoff already handles the shape.

  4. Verify board data

    Copy actual face width and available stock length for the selected product, plus the project-approved gap.

  5. Enter one layout zone

    Save area, coverage width, row count, board lengths required, exact boards, adjusted boards, and whole boards.

  6. Resolve special edges

    Add separate takeoffs for picture framing, stairs, patterns, and complex cuts before issuing the purchase summary.

Coverage uses the entered physical board width plus gap. Verify actual dimensions for the chosen product; a nominal label may not equal face width.

Board length and joints

From estimate to order

Calculated quantity versus purchase quantity

In dimension mode, cross-deck width divided by board width plus gap produces rows; row count and run length produce required board length. Board stock length and entered allowance then produce whole boards.

The whole-board result is a field-coverage baseline. Add separately reviewed quantities for borders, stairs, patterns, unusable offcuts, and replacement stock before purchase.
